Thabo Bester, a convicted rapist, and murderer managed to run a multimillion-rand scam right from his jail cell in South Africa. Operating under the alias "Tom Motsepe", he posed as the chairperson of 21st Century Media, a production company that he made to look like a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox.
Former employees have revealed that "Tom" was hands-on in the company's operations, persuading people to quit their jobs at established media houses to join his scam event company.
In 2018, 21st Century Media promoted a "Women in Media" conference with Hollywood A-listers as guest speakers, which turned out to be a complete fraud. Attendees at the launch event were told that "Tom Motsepe" would video call in from New York, but it was later revealed that he was speaking from his prison cell.
Recently, evidence has emerged that Bester faked his death in a cell fire and escaped from prison in May 2022. There are indications that he has been running a new business with celebrity doctor Nandipha Magudumana. This case highlights the need for stricter measures to be put in place to prevent inmates from running illegal operations inside prisons.
